The two main categories of tazkira are general and specific, In the first category, the lives and poetry of poets are discussed comprehensively, whereas in the second, the biographies and poetry of poets are restricted according to a particular period, geographical region, theme, literary genre, or other specific criterion. The tazkiras of Persian-speaking poets began in the fifth century AH and reached its peak during the Qajar period, the Persian monarch Fath-Ali Shah Qajar was deeply interested in poetry which provide favorable environment for its development and gain widespread popularity for poetry and poetry-writing. He also showed considerable interest in recording the lives and poetry of poets associated with his court and commissioned several writers to compile tazkiras of the poets of his royal court.
The poetry and persona of Haji Mohammad Jan Qudsi Mashhadi (d. 1056 AH), a distinguished poet of the Shah Jahani court, mark a pivotal and brilliant chapter in the annals of Persian literature. Presenting the research paper "Qudsi Mashhadi Under Scrutiny:اا Re-Evaluating Classical and Contemporary Literary Criticisms," this study systematically gathers and critically examines the evaluations of early biographers (tazkira writers) alongside modern critics regarding his biographical details and poetic craftsmanship. Early biographers—many of whom were Qudsi’s contemporaries and witnessed his life firsthand—recorded his biographical narrative with remarkable authenticity based on direct observation. Beyond chronicling his life, they provided analytical and descriptive judgements that overwhelmingly praise his creative mastery, while also attending to minor nuances and stylistic subtleties of his verse. Conversely, modern scholars and literary critics, equipped with contemporary critical frameworks, have revisited these historical assessments to elucidate the techical and stylistic dimensions of his poetry. As a paramount figure of the Isfahani style (Sabk-e Isfahani), Qudsi revitalized Persian poetry through subtle imagery, delicate thought, and thematic innovation (mazmun-afarini). This paper aims to organize, review, and methodically analyze these literary judgments and biographical records within a rigorous academic framework. Ultimately, this comprehensive study not only fosters a accurate understanding of Qudsi Mashhadi’s artistic identity, but also demonstrates that biographers and critics across generations have consistently acclaimed him as a master poet and an authoritative voice of the Isfahani style.
Saghir Siddiqui is a relatively neglected poet of Urdu literature whose poetry, both during his lifetime and after his death, was published largely on the basis of popular interest rather than sustained literary scholarship. Although his poetic works are available and Yunus Adeeb’s valuable writings and biographical work provide substantial material on his life, comparatively little critical attention has been devoted to the diverse dimensions of Saghir Siddiqui’s poetry. His ghazal is significant not only for its classical poetic tradition but also for its distinctive individual expression and emotional intensity. His poetry encompasses a wide range of themes, including revolution, human emotions, religious devotion, Naat, and the experiences of poverty, helplessness, and deprivation. These thematic and stylistic dimensions reveal a poet whose work merits renewed critical consideration. The present study therefore attempts to revisit Saghir Siddiqui’s poetry through a focused analysis of its diverse themes, emotional depth, classical influences, and individual poetic expression, with a view to highlighting aspects that have remained comparatively unexplored in existing scholarship.
Ali Muhammad Lone is widely recognized as a pioneer of modern Kashmiri drama. Following his sudden death in 1936, the University and the wider intellectual community undertook several initiatives to preserve his memory, including naming a university hall, road, student circle, and hostel after him, and installing his bust at the University. His wife, Mary Emily Blende Woolner, further commemorated his legacy by commissioning a memorial sculpture from the renowned sculptor Gilbert Ledward, which was erected on Mall Road in 1938 and survives to the present day. Based on newly discovered archival documents, this article reconstructs these commemorative initiatives and examines their significance in the intellectual and cultural history of colonial Lahore. Drawing on Simone de Beauvoir's concept of gender as social construction, Judith Butler's theory of gender performativity, Kate Millett's analysis of patriarchy as a political institution, Heidi Hartmann's materialist account of patriarchal solidarity, Adrienne Rich's theorization of the female body as contested terrain, and Hélène Cixous's notion of writing the body, the study traces how Tara negotiates bodily autonomy, marital consent, dowry-based economic valuation, motherhood as institution versus experience, and the double moral standard applied to men and women. The paper argues that Tara's resistance operates less through open rebellion than through cumulative small refusals of silence, of prescribed roles, of inherited meanings, that gradually reconstitute her as a self-possessed subject. Situating this reading within existing Urdu feminist criticism, the paper contends that Razia Fasih Ahmad presents woman not as a passive victim but as a conscious, questioning, and resisting being, and that her internal awakening, rather than external circumstance, constitutes the novel's central feminist achievement.
The purpose of writing a travelogue is not merely to explore a land; it also entails documenting its political and social history alongside its geographical and historical significance. Drawing upon both his nazms and ghazals, the study analyzes how Hafeez Siddiqui responded to catastrophic events of the twentieth century, particularly the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the prolonged dispossession of the Palestinian people, transforming collective grief into powerful literary protest. His poetry demonstrates how the poet foregrounded the suffering of women, children, and the natural world to heighten the moral urgency of an anti-war stance. The article further argues that Hafeez Siddiqui advocates for knowledge as a force for human welfare rather than destruction. He also satirizes powerful countries for their failure to stop wars.
Psychological stress is a major concern of contemporary life, yet experiences such as anxiety, grief, fear, separation, desire and uncertainty have always been part of human existence. This study examines how Baba Farid’s poetry as a spiritual and cultural reflection on human suffering, patience, contentment, self-reflection and the temporary nature of worldly life.

The study primarily draws on Kalam Baba Farid, edited by M. Asif Khan, and supported by Punjabi literary scholarship, the study relates Farid’s ideas to psychological concepts such as stress, coping, emotion regulation, acceptance, spirituality and meaning-making. The analysis shows that Baba Farid’s poetry should not be treated as psychological therapy. Rather, it offers a culturally familiar way of understanding suffering, controlling emotional reactions, reducing excessive desire and comparison and developing patience and contentment. The study therefore presents Farid’s thought and modern psychology as two distinct traditions that can meaningfully illuminate human distress and the search for meaning today.
Allāmah Abd al-Azīz Parhārvī (d. 1239 AH) was a distinguished scholar of Hadith, Qur’anic exegesis, Islamic jurisprudence, theology, and philosophy in the Indian subcontinent. This article examines his methodology for critically evaluating widely circulated, weak, and fabricated Hadith reports in his important work, Kawthar al-Nabī wa Zulāl Ḥawḍihi al-Rawī. In this book, Parhārvī arranged narrations alphabetically under 353 subjects and assessed their authenticity in light of the opinions of prominent Hadith critics, particularly Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī, Jalāl al-Dīn al-Suyūṭī, al-Sakhāwī, Ibn al-Jawzī, and Mullā ʿAlī al-Qārī. Through an analysis of selected narrations relating to Āyat al-Kursī, trade, love, the vision of Allah, the constriction of the grave, food, injustice, illness, ablution, and the Day of Eid al-Fitr, the article identifies the principal features of Parhārvī’s critical approach. The study finds that he does not regard an individual scholar’s judgement, criticism of a particular narrator, or expressions such as lā aṣla lahu and lā yathbut as sufficient grounds for declaring a narration fabricated. Instead, he considers multiple chains of transmission, corroborating reports, the opinions of the majority of Hadith scholars, scrutiny of chains and texts, and the established principles of Hadith criticism. At times, he follows the majority opinion; elsewhere, he relies on a recognised Hadith authority or adopts an independent position based on evidence. The article concludes that Parhārvī’s methodology is comprehensive, balanced, comparative, and firmly grounded in the principles of Hadith criticism. His assessments also display significant similarities with the findings of contemporary Hadith scholarship.
Arabic poetry is rich with the treasure of Naat and possesses such distinctive characteristics which make it unique and unparalleled. In the Islamic world, Na't poetry has flourished alot alongside other form of poetry not merely on tradition and imitation, but on the basis of feelings and emotion of love, affection and ecstatic devotion. Aisha bint Yusuf al-Ba'uniyyah (d. 922 AH/ 1517 CE) in the fifteen century AD, was a distinguished Sufi poetess and scholar of the Abbasid-era tradition. Her Na't poetry, which is adorned and embellished with the love for the Messenger of Allah(ﷺ) reflects mystical insight, deep spiritual knowledge and profound devotion In al-Ba'uniyyah's poetry the concept of "Mercy to the world" (Rahmat li'l-Alamin) is not limited to Muslims alone, rather, it appears as a universal message of guidance, compassion, goodness and love for all nations and all creation. This research examines the extended connotations of "Rahmat-ul-lil-Almeen" in the Arabic poetry of al-Ba'uniyyah and to analyze its various dimensions, of individual, society, ethics, spirituality, character, and universal humanism. It explores how her Na't poetry encompasses not merely literary genre but rather a means and source for universal embodiment of mercy, moral reformation, inner purification, human refinement and spiritual elevation. In this respective context, Benjamin Netanyahu’s statements are significant in using narratives of civilizations, security, and legitimacy to frame the Gaza war. This study employs a Corpus-Assisted Critical Discourse Analysis (CACDA) of five selected speeches delivered by Benjamin Netanyahu between 2024 and 2025 to examine how the language produces the Gaza war within a civilizational framework. The study adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative corpus analysis with qualitative critical discourse analysis and thematic interpretation. AntConc (version 4.3.1.0) was used to analyze the corpus, utilizing methods such as frequency lists, concordance lines (KWIC keywords in context), and collocation analysis, while Van Dijk’s socio-cognitive model was employed to examine ideological patterns, positive self-presentation, negative other-presentation, and the construction of “self” and “other.” The findings demonstrate systematic discursive methods that produce a distinct in-group and out-group separation, depicting Israel as democratic, civilized, and morally and ethically justified while on the other hand framing Hamas and Iran as terrorist and existential threats. The corpus findings further reveal the recurrent use of lexical patterns related to Israel, Hamas, Gaza, war, threat, terror, security, civilization, democracy, and victory, which contribute to the construction of threat, legitimacy, collective identity, and ideological boundaries. These patterns reflect a wider narrative of civilizational war related to that addressed in Samuel P.Huntington’s thesis The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order and strengthen themes of collective identity, threat building, and the justification of military action. The study contributes to Corpus-Assisted Critical Discourse Analysis by examining ideological representations in political discourse and demonstrating how quantitative linguistic patterns can be connected with qualitative interpretations of power, identity, and civilizational narratives. It also provides a useful reference for future research on political discourse and war rhetoric.
Zarqa Naz Ali Furqan Syed Copyright (c) 2026 ORIENTAL COLLEGE MAGAZINE
