The Representation of Culture, Environment, and Nature in Sahr-ul-Bayan and Other Masnavis

Abstract

Mir Hasan wrote a total of twelve masnavis, including Sihr-ul-Bayan. Dr. Waheed Qureshi compiled the remaining eleven masnavis under the title Masnaviat-e-Hasan, which was published by the Majlis-e-Taraqqi-e-Adab, Lahore. He achieved everlasting fame through his masnavi Sihr-ul-Bayan. He composed this masterpiece in the last quarter of the eighteenth century (1784–85). Even today, nearly two and a half centuries later, the magic of Sihr-ul-Bayan remains undiminished. This paper focuses on the themes of culture, environment, and nature in Sihr-ul-Bayan to substantiate this research in Mir Hasan’s other masnavis It discusses Sihr-ul-Bayan in detail and attempts to identify the factors that have contributed to making it a great work of art.
