Alfred Cooper Woolner (1878–1936), the distinguished Sanskrit scholar and Vice-Chancellor of the University of the Punjab, Lahore, made significant contributions to Sanskrit studies and higher education in colonial Punjab. Following his sudden death in 1936, the University and the wider intellectual community undertook several initiatives to preserve his memory, including naming a university hall, road, student circle, and hostel after him, and installing his bust at the University. His wife, Mary Emily Blende Woolner, further commemorated his legacy by commissioning a memorial sculpture from the renowned sculptor Gilbert Ledward, which was erected on Mall Road in 1938 and survives to the present day. Based on newly discovered archival documents, this article reconstructs these commemorative initiatives and examines their significance in the intellectual and cultural history of colonial Lahore. It sheds new light on Woolner's enduring legacy and on the ways in which scholarly and institutional memory was constructed and preserved in colonial Punjab.
